WAN, Shiu Ming

溫兆明香港太平山飛鱼,1938年出生於香港。曾於1956年代表中國香港參與澳洲墨爾本第十六屆奧運。畢生游泳運動的熱情和業餘參與貢獻和支持中國香港社會已經跨越七十餘年。查保持者的游泳項目記錄,計有6屆維多利亞海峽渡海泳, 21個全港游泳項目紀錄和中國香港游泳總會首創辦五,六英里兩屆馬拉松游泳冠軍永遠保持,實屬難得可貴。

從十二歲開始,已屬南華會海泳場小飛魚,曾代表南華會參與中國香港華人泳賽和中西泳賽,水球以及全港校際賽事等,前後已創下不少紀錄和冠軍。1969年赴英深造國際游泳教練和教師。1970年執任中國香港游泳總會屬會總教練和專訓1970年中國香港游泳代表隊參與第六屆亞運於泰國曼谷,獲准提名為水球裁判。1982年翻譯國際游泳聯合會FINA游泳規則英文版為中文,給予中國香港參與游泳比賽人士參查參考。2000年參與進修和担任中國香港殘疾人士協會游泳教練。2015至2021年先後出版書籍包括香港游泳發展史,香港掌故史,科技游泳與健康三本,貢獻給中國香港社會各階層人士閱讀,內容包括游泳改進,健康,歷史,體育,娛樂,故事,詩詞,世界,中國,廣東以及中國香港特有等知識。

到現在還深研究前往畢生熱愛的旅程,以「永不言休」貢獻和支持中國香港社會,感恩乃是命運的。溫教練目前是香港最年長的奧運選手。

Wan Shiu Ming was born in Hong Kong in 1938.  Since the age of 12, Wan Shiu Ming was affectionately known as the “little flying fish” of Tai Ping Shan.  He representing the South China Athletic Association swimming club, whilst he trained in a “sea pool”, bamboo swimming shed erected off the shores of Shau Kei Wan. 

In 1956, Wan was selected to represent Hong Kong in the 16th edition of the Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. Since that time, his lifelong passion for swimming and amateur participation has led to over 70 yrs of support and contribution to Hong Kong sports and society.

Wan’s impressive swimming record includes winning the Victoria Harbour Cross Harbour championships 6 times, breaking 21 Hong Kong swimming records and also being crowned the inaugural five-mile and  six-mile marathon swimming champion by the Hong Kong Swimming Association of China, which is a very rare feat.

Since the age of 12, Wan Shiu Ming was affectionately known as the “little flying fish” of the South China Athletic Association swimming pool. He represented SCAA in both the Hong Kong Chinese Swimming Competition, plus the Western Swimming Competition too, competing in a variety of events such as water polo and inter-school competitions etc., where he was awarded many records and championships.

Wan travelled to England in 1969 to study and gain credentials as an international swimming coach and teacher. In 1970, he became  Head Coach at the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association,  going on to coach the Hong Kong swimming team at the 6th edition of the Asian Games held in Bangkok, Thailand. He was also appointed as a water polo referee at the same Games.  

In 1982, Wan Shiu Ming translated the International Swimming Federations (FINA) rule book into Chinese, whereupon it was distributed to Hong Kong swimming competitors and officials for reference.

Wan, went on to study and further his skills to become the swimming coach for HKSAPD in 2000, to better prepare him to work with Hong Kong’s disabled athletes and seeing him later nominated as the coach at the 8th Paralympic Games in Busan, South Korea in 2002. A year later in 2003, Hong Kong, China hosted the first FESPIC Youth Games for the physically disabled.

Wan is also a keen writer, authoring several books between 2015 to 2021. The  three volumes include the History of Hong Kong Swimming 1950-1978, History of Hong Kong 1843 - 1997 and Swimming Technology and Health. These books have been widely circulated and read by people from all walks of life in Hong Kong, appealing to those interested in improving swimming, health and those interested in the history of sports. The books  feature photos, stories and poetry, from a world, Guangdong and Hong Kong point of view.

In 2022, at the grand age of 84, Wan is still deeply researching the journey into his lifelong love, contributing and supporting Hong Kong society with a "Never Say No” attitude.

Wan Shiu Ming is currently treasured as our oldest living Olympian in Hong Kong.
